Recommendation Letter

(This is my recommendation letter for postdoc application given by my PhD supervisor.)

I am happy to write this letter in support of Dr. Dattatraya Parle, who has applied for a post-doctoral position at your Institution. I have known Datta over the last 15 years. He has completed his MTech and PhD from IIT Bombay. Being a postgraduate student from our own department, he has excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, which have been backed by his never-ending desire to learn new skills. Due to his desire to learn, he joined for PhD while working at Infosys Limited during 2008-2015. His PhD thesis titled, "Modelling of Size Effect in Microcutting Considering Fracture and Microstructure". The major objective of this work is to model the size effect in micro-cutting using numerical simulations followed by experimental validation. FEA simulations are performed using ANSYS to evaluate the contribution of fracture phenomenon to the size effect in micro-cutting. Meshless technique known as SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) simulations are performed using LS-DYNA to evaluate the contribution of grain and grain boundaries to the size effect in micro-cutting.

Datta has published three international journal publications and one international conference publication based on this work. His work was published in prestigious international journals such as Journal of ASME Journal of Micro Nano-Manufacturing, International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture and Machining Science and Technology. This shows his strong desire to excel in whatever he takes in hand. I am thoroughly impressed by his work during his PhD program here. In general, I observed that Datta has extremely well-developed writing skills.

After completing his PhD, Datta continued working at Infosys in CAD/CAM, FEA, CFD, PLM, etc. He was also working in emerging technologies such as Industry 4.0, Autonomous Vehicles, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, etc. In 2018, he started his start-up known as Simulation Centre. At start-up he developed products using 3D Printing. He applied his CAD/CAM, FEA and CFD skills in his product development. He demonstrated some of his products at IIT Bombay.

During his PhD at IIT Bombay, Datta has helped me in training and guiding other MTech and PhD students for FEA and CFD simulations and programming. He has supported them so well that most of these students were able to do FEA and CFD simulations in their research work. He certainly has excellent mentoring qualities. I consider Datta as one of my best industry sponsored PhD students thus far. He is extremely independent, dedicated, trust-worthy and ever-ready to take responsibility. I remember him as a very meticulous, highly positive and motivated student. I admire his tremendous ability to focus on the work at hand.

Presently, he continues consulting various companies in FEA/CFD simulations as well as emerging technologies. Recently, an open-source based FEA simulation framework was implemented at his start-up using programming languages such as C/C++, Python, MATLAB, etc.  At Infosys, he has won several awards for his applications of FEA and CFD simulations in Aerospace, Automobile and Biomedical Engineering.

Datta’s never ending desire to learn has motivated him to take up a post-doctoral research fellowship. He has a desire to do high-end research and development by utilizing his professional skills. I am confident that Datta has the potential to undertake modern research and development activities. I am sure he will climb many heights in future and will be an asset to the organization wherever he joins. I therefore recommend him strongly for the post-doctoral position.
