Welcome to the Amazing World of Virtual Reality.

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual Reality (VR) is an immersive technology in which realistic simulated three-dimensional environment is created digitally. This three-dimensional environment is viewed using special device called head-mounted display (HMD sometimes referred as VR Headset) by immersing into it. In its simplest form VR can be experienced by downloading VR App on smartphone and putting it in VR headset. There are several types of VR headsets for smartphones ranging from few Hundred to few Thousand Rupees. Some examples are Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream which are still in the range of Rs 10000 to 20000. For a common man or student or learner of VR, the cost might appear prohibitive. Therefore, Google developed open-source and affordable VR Headset known as Google Cardboard in 2014. You can either make your own or buy of the shelf ready to use Google Cardboard. Simulation Centre has developed Do It Yourself (DIY) Kit for making VR Headset. If you have not purchased kit click link below:

Step By Step Procedure:

You can watch video below to quickly understand How to Make VR Headset

What is there in the Kit?

DIY Kit contains following items

Step 1 - Making of Lens Holder

Put the shiny surface of Glass Holder-1 facing downwards on a soft and clean surface or cloth.

Apply glue on periphery of both circular cut.

Stick lenses exactly over it with flat surface downwards. Wait for 5 minutes or until glue dries.
(Note - Do not touch lens surface with your hands or any other things)

Now take the Glass Holder-2, apply glue on the non-shiny surface and paste it on the Glass Holder-1 as shown

Manually press and hold the two parts firmly for 5-10 minutes until the glue dries. Alternatively, you can use clips at the corners and leave it to dry.

After drying, fold the sides of the Glass Holder-1 along the mark towards Glass Holder-2.

Now Glass Holder assembly will look like this.

Step 2 - Folding of Main Body

Place the shiny surface of Main Body facing downwards on clean surface.

Apply glue on outer part of nose side of folded surface of Glass Holder-1.

Paste it on the black line on main body in such a way that folded part faces towards the flap side.

Press and hold the folded side of Glass Holder against Main Body until glue dries.

Now apply glue on the outer part of remaining three sides of Glass Holder and fold main body over it as shown.

Also Apply glue on small fold of side.

Fold and hold.

Press and hold for 10 minutes or until glue dries. For effective gluing, you should press with palm on both sides and both thumbs on the top.

Now your VR Headset will look like this.

Step 3 -  Making of Splitter

Take splitter.

Make small cut along the centre line of the Splitter to fit it within the height of VR Headset.

Fold the cut surfaces towards the shiny surface.

Now apply glue on the non-shiny surface of Splitter.

Fold and stick two halves along centre line

Apply glue on the non-shiny folded surfaces on both ends.

Properly stick the splitter in between two lenses of VR as shown. Gently press and hold until glue dries.

Step 4  - Velcro stapling and finishing

Staple two pieces of Velcro containing tiny hooks on  the two ends of the flap. Velcro pieces are marked black.

Staple two soft Velcro pieces to the Main Body opposite to flap Velcro pieces.

Fold the flap along the mark line at the bottom and top as shown.

Your VR Headset is ready.

You can enjoy surprising joy of virtual reality on your handmade VR Headset. If you like painting, you can paint with crayons or sketch pens as per your interest. Just remember that you don’t damage lenses.
