Problems solved in ANSYS using LINK Elements.

LINK180 - 3D Spar (or Truss) Element Description:

LINK180 is a 3-D spar that is useful in a variety of engineering applications. The element can be used to model trusses, sagging cables, links, springs, and so on. The element is a uniaxial tension-compression element with three degrees of freedom at each node: translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions.

Problem 1 - A steel bar of a diameter of 20 mm and a length of 400 mm is subjected to a tensile force of 40 kN. Determine:

(a) the tensile stress and

(b) the axial strain developed in the bar if the Young’s modulus of steel E = 200 kN/mm2

Analytically calculated,
𝛔 = PL/AE = 127.23 MPa
Ɛ = 𝛔 / E = 0.636 x 10⁻⁶

Problem 2 - A copper bar of a rectangular section of 20 mm × 30 mm and a length of 500 mm is subjected to an axial compressive load of 60 kN. If E = 102 kN/mm2 and v for copper = 0.34, determine:

(a) Compressive stress and

(b) Axial strain.

Analytically calculated,
𝛔 = PL/AE = -100 MPa
Ɛ = 𝛔 / E = -0.98 x 10⁻³
