The Good Harvest
Little
Pihu and Dad decided to plant a vegetable garden. They planted a variety of
vegetables, like beans, tomatoes and cucumbers. Pihu watered the plants every
day and even removed the weeds. “Weeds can be harmful for the plants.” her father
had once said.
Every
day she would ask Dad, “When will the plants grow?” “Soon,” Dad would reply
each time.
Days
passed and Pihu began to grow restless. One morning she noticed tiny a buds on
her plants! Pihu became super excited. Soon, the buds changed into tiny
vegetables. Each day the vegetables would grow bigger and make Pihu happier. Patiently
she waited for the vegetables to ripen.
“When
can we pick the green beans Dad?” asked an excited Pihu one sunny morning. “Today
afternoon,” replied Dad. But when they went to pluck the green beans, they found
that the rabbit had nibbled every green bean. Pihu was disappointed. “When can
we pick the juicy cucumbers Dad?” she asked.'
“Tomorrow,”
replied Dad. But the next day they found that the crows had pecked on all the
cucumbers. Pihu became very upset. The following day she asked, “Dad, the
tomatoes are big and red. When can we pick them?” “Let's go now,” said Dad. But
the parrots and squirrels had already dug into all the tomatoes!
Pihu
became very sad and began to cry. She had worked very hard to grow the
vegetables. Just then her mom came up with the plan. She suggested placing a
scarecrow in the garden.
“Thats
wonderful idea!” said Dad. Pihu and Mom get down to work. They gathered some
old socks and clothes, even Dad's old shirts! Mom got, some hay and two long
wooden poles for the frame. Dad made the frame and dressed the scarecrow in his
old checkered shirt and on old pair of jeans. Pihu stuffed the clothes with old
rags and hay.
Mom
made the head of the scarecrow by filling in a pillow. She made the eyes and
nose using large buttons. Dad made the hands by tying old garden gloves to the
sleeves of the shirt. Mom gave the final touches by stitching on old cloth hat
on to its head. She tied a colorful scarf around the neck which would flutter
with the wind. Finally the scarecrow was ready!
Next
morning, Pihu and Dad planted more vegetables. “Let's add some corn,"
suggested Pihu.
Dad
agreed. They put the scarecrow right in the middle of their garden. Dad made
the fence stronger leaving no gaps for any unwanted visitors to pop in.
This
time Pihu was sure that they would have a good harvest. She once again waited
eagerly for the vegetables to ripen.
Many
Sundays later, when the sun came up, Pihu and her Mom put on their garden
gloves and picked plenty of juicy corns, green beans, crunchy cucumbers and red
tomatoes.
The
rabbit watched from behind the fence. The woodchuck stared at the tempting
corns. The crows and parrots eyed the cucumbers from the top of the wall. And
the squirrel ogled at the tomatoes from the neighbor’s garden. Pihu laughed out
loud.
Mom
and Dad made bean and cucumber salad with hot tomato and corn soup that night.
Pihu dipped the toast in the hot soup and bit into it with a CRUNCHHHH!
