GIIS - Class 1 - Mathematics -Main Page

Dear Parents,
I know everyone of you is nervous as well as curious. As your child will face the examination first time. As a parent of class I child, I offer few tips for preparation of your child for the examination. These tips worked for me and my child. Hopefully, it will work for you and your kid as well.

Steps to prepare your kid for Maths: Preparation for maths can be tricky, if you are not mathematics enthusiastic. I came across many parents who have mathematics phobia for themselves as well as kids. On the other hand if you or your your kid love the mathematics then there is no fun filled subject than mathematics. Moreover, according to me mathematics is the only subject which doesn't need mugging up like other subjects. Understanding and applying the concepts is a key thing in mathematics.

For GIIS Class I mathematics, I am not impressed with the presentation of XSEED books for mathematics. I felt NCERT books are better for mathematics. But we don't have choice as the contents are different. To make subject easier, suggest you should get familiar with the contents of mathematics block-wise. Once you are familiar with each block, develop logical flow and start preparation of your child. I suggest to use following approach for preparation of mathematics. Key in preparation of any subject is PRACTICE as the saying goes "practice makes man perfect". And practice is must for mathematics. Build confidence by motivating the kid by using simple questions in the beginning. Once confidence is built then increase level of difficulty.

Step 1: Start with XSEED Maths Volume 1. Read yourself and understand what are the concepts covered by each block. Class 1 Maths is not that difficult and even if you are not scholar of maths you should able to understand it. Develop a flow for the preparation of your kid. Developing flow involves understanding of level of your kid, understanding whether you can directly start as is with block-wise contents or does your child need to know something more, etc. etc.
Step 2: Day 1 - Morning session - Start revising the concepts required for each block before starting with actual block. First explain your kid the concepts of block. Prepare few sample questions and let your kid answer. At this stage you should confidence building and motivation should take place. Your kid should start loving mathematics. Never say in front of the kid that mathematics is difficult. For that matter it is true for any other subject.
Step 3: Day 1 - Evening session - If additional concepts are not required then start with block. Explain block concepts in interactive manner, if possible. Once don this, let your kid answer questions given in volume 1.
Step 4: Day 2 - Morning session - Practice more questions from Volume 2. You can also prepare your sample questionnaire.
Step 5: Day 2 - Evening session - Take more practice using question set provided in this blog.
Step 6: Repeat Step 2 through Step 5 for all the blocks.

Sample question set prepared by me are given below:
Block 1: Nearby Numbers
Block 2: Making 5's and 10's

Block 8 and 9: Addition
Block 10 and 11: Subtraction

Block 15: Data Handling
Block 18: Numbers 0 to 100

Block 24: Introduction to Time
Block 25: Introduction to Money

Thanks for your time. Keep visiting.
